The various options for ice baths in summer in Canada

In this post, we offer you a video featuring our co-founder, Pierre-Luc Corriveau, delving into the world of summer ice baths and cold plunges in Canada. With a palpable passion for fitness, health, and well-being, Pierre-Luc explores the various options available for those seeking to reap the refreshing benefits of cold plunges during the hottest months of the year.

If you prefer not to watch the video, read the text below it for a summary of the discussed options. Please note that the video is recorded in French, so you may want to use subtitles.

Here are the possible options for ice baths in summer in Quebec and North America, along with Pierre-Luc's assessment:

Cheap fabric ice baths (around 100$)

These products, often offered at advantageous prices on platforms like Amazon, may seem appealing at first glance. However, they are not functional for summer in Canada. Not insulated and fragile, they can easily break, thus offering a disappointing experience. See the post about Jordan and his broken ice bath!

Galvanized steel ice baths (around 500$)

Not featured in the video, although durable, galvanized steel ice baths are also ineffective in summer due to their lack of insulation.

Inflatable ice baths (around 900$)

Often marketed as a convenient solution due to their portability, these inflatable ice baths are generally poorly insulated and expensive to cool. Although the air chamber does provide some insulation, it still results in significant cooling costs. Additionally, their price combined with the high energy costs to keep them cool can make this option unattractive.

DIY projects ($1,000 and up)

Some resourceful individuals opt for a DIY approach by converting a freezer or any other container into an ice bath. While this option may seem cost-effective at first glance, it requires tools, DIY skills to make the bath aesthetic, and does not guarantee long-term durability due, for example, to rust that can build up in steel mechanisms. Additionally, outdoors, the various openings can allow rodents and other pests to sneak into the bath, posing hygiene and safety issues.

Competitor's insulated plastic barrels ($2,200 and up)

Barrels offered by some competitors are sturdy and often insulated, but they come at a high price, with shipping costs usually exceeding $600. These barrels often come alone and therefore require the additional purchase of a cooler, thus significantly increasing the total cost, nearing $5,000.

Luxury ice baths ($5,000 and up)

These high-end products often offer advanced features, such as integrated cooling systems. However, their price, ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 and more, may deter many potential customers. This option does not democratize the benefits of cold therapy by making the experience expensive.
